Marudi Homemade Ice-Cream

My colleague's been raving about Marudi homemade ice-cream.

Where? I asked, interested.

"Taman Tunku," he replied.

Hmn .... I suppose I would not be driving all the way there just for an ice-cream. The other day, I picked up my friend from the airport. So we decided to go to Taman Tunku to try out the ice-cream.

Ice-cream, RM2.50

Ice-cream Special, RM3.50

The colourful homemade ice-cream was delicious! It was smooth, not too sweet, and had a delicate coconut milk flavour. It was totally enjoyable. I had it plain, but my friend chose to have hers with jelly, stewed red beans, and corn.

We also decided to try the rojak .....

 Rojak, RM5.00 onwards

Sotong Kangkong, RM5.00 onwards

The ingredients in the rojak included cucumbers, pineapples, tofu, jicama, and slices of squid. They were served in a piquant rojak sauce.

The Sotong Kangkong was made up of just blanched water convolvulus and squid slices.  The sauce tasted milder and sweeter, compared to the rojak.

Of the two, my friend and I both preferred the Sotong Kangkong.

My friend and I vowed to drive back there .... next weekend.

Nissin Teppan Yaki Soba

Have you watched tontantin on Youtube? He's posted over 5,000 videos on instant noodles, sourced from all over the world.  Ever since I watched tontantin, I had a craving for instant noodles, especially the dried variety.

The other day, when I was at the supermarket, I came across the Nissin Fried Noodles Specialist. This product was made in Singapore. Hmn ... the packaging said "Teppan Yakisoba". That's supposed a Japanese-inspired hot plate fried noodles ....

The packaging ... see picture of the Teppan hot plate ..

Inside the packaging were noodles, seasoning powder, seasoning oil and seasoning sauce

I cooked the noodles till they softened and drained them. Then I added seasoning oil, seasoning sauce, and 3/4 sachet of the seasoning powder. I mixed the flavouring well and served my noodles.

 Nissin Teppan Yakisoba

Hmn ... I liked the texture of the noodles. It was springy and nice to chew on. The noodles tasted salty and with a hint of sweetness, and quite sharp with the smell and taste of dried chilli in seasoning powder. Overall, quite yum.

Deep-fried Bread

I love deep-fried bread. I vividly remember the times when I was a child ... when Fourth Aunt spreaded some prawn past over bread squares and then deep-fried those. I loved them so much!! Then, in primary school, the canteen sold sardine deep-fried bread. Those were really tasty!

And so, at my school canteen the other day, I saw some deep-fried bread on sale. Of course, I bought a piece.

Bread, coated with egg and deep-fried

Inside was crunchy vegetables - stir-fried cabbage and carrot shreds ...

The savoury filling seemed to be quite yum .... I had the bread with lots of chilli sauce. It was alright, but a bit expensive at RM1.00 a slice.

I'm Lovin' It : Spicy Chicken McWrap

I love the Spicy Chicken McWrap. I had it at the newly-renovated outlet at the Bintang Plaza Mega Mall.

Nice Packaging ...

Spicy Chicken McWrap and French Fries

Take a closer look ....

Now why did I like it?

I've always loved wraps. I loved the texture of the tortilla wrap. At McDonald's, the 10-inch tortilla wrap was fresh, warm and chewy. I loved the texture.

I loved the crunchy and tasty chicken thigh meat, coated in a fiery crust. The meats weren't as juicy as I wanted them to be .... but they were freshly fried, and spicy flavour came through quite well.

I loved the crispy and fresh vegetables in the wrap. There were lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage and carrot shreds, encasing the chicken in a compact manner. The fragrant sesame deluxe sauce was fragrant and tasty too.

I wish this was a permanent item on the menu. Unfortunately, it was only available for a limited till 03 July 2013. That's today! So, Spicy Chicken McWrap, do make your come back to the menu soon!

Married Bread

I was lazing in bed on a wet Sunday morning. Cold, rainy, and I snuggled deep into my blanket while my sleepy brain scanned over where I could eat breakfast. Hmn ..... I felt like eating Married Bread and coffee.

Lols. Married Bread is Roti Kahwin .... a coffee shop term for butter and kaya toast. Why "married", one may ask? Hmn .... probably cause it consists of 2 ingredients being used together to spread over the toast .... or 2 ingredients that help the toast to stick together. Just like a married couple having to stick together through thick and thin. Ideally, I suppose.

So .... one of the places that I know of that sells charcoal toasted kaya toast is New Shanghai Cafe. At the front of the shop, the staff spreads Golden Churn butter, followed by pandan kaya or screwpine-flavoured coconut jam on a piece of white bread. Then she tops it with another piece of bread before toasting it on a charcoal grill.

Kopi with 2 sets of Married Bread / Roti Kahwin, RM1.50 per set

The pretty green-coloured pandan kaya on the lightly browned toast ....
The freshly toasted bread was crispy and light, with a faint hint of smoke. The butter was rich, while the pandan kaya was fragrant and not too sweet. Great to eat, but I would prefer the pandan kaya to be a tad sweeter and the butter to be salted. That to me, would make an even yummier toast.

The perfect food to eat with the toasts would be soft boiled eggs.

 Two soft boiled eggs
It's not that easy to get soft-boiled eggs, cooked the way I liked it. But that morning, I thought the eggs were cooked in the perfect consistency - soft and custard-like and not too watery. I added dash of black soy sauce and pepper .... and yums .... loved them to bits!

I also ordered a Prawn Wanton soup and a Dumpling soup ....

 Prawn Wanton Soup, RM3.50

A dumpling ...
Hmn .... the dumplings were smaller and flatter now compared to before. But they were still springy and yum.

Well, my friends and I used to frequent this place in the past .... but somehow, we stopped. I'd not been here for years! So it kind of felt like homecoming. Lol.

Rice Noodle Rolls

I have never really liked rice noodle rolls or chee cheung fun. It's one of the dim sum favourites, consisting of a meat or seafood, wrapped in a steamed rice flour batter. It is served with a light soy sauce and some spicy sambal.

I suppose that I have never found rice noodle rolls that I enjoy eating. That is probably why I have never been fond of it. Till I tried the one at Jing Wood, and the rice noodle roll was so good that it made me crave for it over and over again.

Rice Noodle Rolls with BBQ Pork

Rice Noodle Rolls with Shrimps

Diners can choose either BBQ pork or shrimps in their rolls. We ordered one of each. What's nice about the rolls here is the texture. The noodle roll is thin, almost translucent, springy, chewy and yet not hard. The shrimps and meats used are already pre-cooked. But the shrimps still taste sweet. The special sauce was also delicious. It was light, savoury and not too salty, and most importantly it tasted good when eaten with the rolls. The sambal was fiery and fragrant with the taste of dried shrimps.

At RM4.00 per serving, customers have to wait till 30 minutes sometimes for their orders to arrive.
