Meeting The Girls In Kuching

The girls were all in Kuching for the weekend! They met up at Boulevard Shopping Mall, and after browsing at the numerous outlets there ..... they decided to have some light eats at Kim Bay HK - Macau Restaurant.

The three of them had coffee ....

 Thick and unsweetened .... not bad, but could be smoother .... 

Beef Horfun

I loved this dish, as the flat rice noodles were not too thick, well-fried, and yet not so oily. It was very textural with lots of spring onions, chilli, and beansprouts. Portion was rather small though ..... 

 Portuguese Egg Tarts

We ordered a dozen of these. My friend D loved this and she ate 3 pieces ..... lols. I'd say that they were reasonably good. The pastry was rather flaky and yet could hold the custard together; the egg custard itself  could have been a little softer, but as it is now, it was quite alright. They made quite enjoyable bites, really.

The girls hadn't seen each other for ages!! And there was a lot to catch up indeed .... 

Arrrrggggghhh! Burberry Haymarket Small Tote! My dream bag! And W beat me to it .... 

After lunch, the girls went separate ways, each busy with their own programmes for the weekend ....

Think Once, Think Twice .... Think Chicken Rice

My friend D and I met up for lunch at The Authentic Chicken Rice, also known as Hock King Cafeteria, at Jalan Ang Cheng Ho. This is a corner coffee shop, painted in yellow .... and it bore this slogan which I found to be rather amusing .... "Think Once, Think Twice .... Think Chicken Rice". Lols .... it thought too many times, I'd back away from the really fatty rice .... only that the rice here was really very delicious!

That noon, I had my steamed chicken rice as it's my absolute favourite .....

Steamed Chicken Rice, RM4.80 and Blanched Beansprouts, RM3.00

And D and I shared a plate of blanched crunchy beansprouts, which was really good to go with the rice.

Lemon Chicken Rice, RM5.30

D chose to have lemon chicken rice ..... I did not ask him if it was nice .... he'll probably just mumble, "OK". Lols .......

I have been here thrice within the month, and I really want to bring my parents here when they come back soon ......

Disappointing Dinner

I suggested to AT to have dinner at Top Point .... and he agreed with me, reluctantly though. He'd been there only once years ago, and I guessed he wasn't too impressed back then. So when we reached the food court, the massive crowd there literally blew him away. Lol. He then got pretty excited as he surveyed the stalls.

The condiments

We decided to eat at Bukit Mata Seafood, stall 25. There was a sizeable number of diners in front of the stall, so we assumed that the food should be ok. Unfortunately, it was not. I was disappointed with 3 out of the 4 dishes! Perhaps we ordered the wrong thing? I did not know ........ but here was what we had.

 Sea cucumber soup

Not complaining about the ingredients, just the taste .... and when added poor quality black vinegar into it .... it seemed quite difficult to stomach. Not recommended. 

 Seafood Tofu

The tofu itself was quite yum .... it was crisp on the outside, and yet soft and egg-y inside ... just that the sauce itself was not that great; the pink surimi sticks totally spoiled the picture ..... That old and cheap looking plastic plate did not help either

Again, this dish was pretty much tasteless

Probably the best dish that night .... 

Hmn .... for the four dishes and 2 bowls of rice, we paid RM50.70 .... AT said it was reasonable .... but I thought it tasted awful. Never again do I want to eat at this stall.

The drink also disappointed. AT requested the lemon be juiced ... but I think the juicer was not cleaned properly .... look at the orange coloured residue from carrots ..... eeew ...

The Best Ice-Cream In Kuching

Guess where I'm going? AT asked me.

We were travelling along Batu Kawa road, heading towards Kuching.

Boulevard Shopping Mall?

Nope, AT said. Somewhere nearer.

Nearer? There was only one other I could think of ..... and that was the Sunny Hill Ice-cream shop.

Indeed that was where were heading. Yippee.

There was a long, long queue as we reached there .... and all the tables were occupied. Such brisk business there was on a weekend!

When it was finally our turn, I ordered ....

Sundae, RM2.80

Sandwich, RM2.80

Well ... basically, the soft serve ice-cream was really smooth and milky, not too sweet and very addictive! There was only vanilla available, but it was fine by me. I love vanilla. Whether served plain on its own, or on homemade bread, the ice-cream was simply just divine. I loved it. I could pretty much lick the bowl clean. :P Shouldn't wait too long till my next visit!!

Tasik Biru & Wind Cave

The beauty of the lake took my breath away .......

This lake is located in Bau, and once a gold-mining lake, thus a man-made lake. It's about 300 feet deep. But the water is blue, and exudes a sense of calmness and serenity. I loved it there .....

Next, we drove to the Wind Cave ... we had to register at the entrance if we wanted to trek into the cave. According to the officer, the trail took only 30 minutes. However, we needed a torch light and he could rent it to us for RM3.00 per torch.

We felt that we did not have the suitable footwear to negotiate our way along the cave .... and hence we decided to forego the walk ..... we merely hung around the entrance ...... we'd have to come back again soon.

After that it was a short drive back to Kuching.

Siniawan

I did not know what the attraction here was ..... till I read a bit about it online. I was supposed to visit in the evenings on Fridays to Sundays because at those times, there would be a food bazaar set up and people could have a variety of food al fresco along the lantern-lit street.

AT was told by the coffee shop proprietor at Kota Sentosa that many make their way to the Chinese temple, during the auspicious dates for the purposes of worshiping the resident deities.

What a beautiful bungalow! 

There is only one main street here at Siniawan, flanked by vintage wooden shophouses. The red lanters hunged above added a certain Oriental feel to this little town. 

This empty street will come alive starting from Friday evenings till Sunday evenings, when people flock here for the Night bazaar.  

The birds nest industry still thrives here

Pure birds' nest is farmed nearby ... 

 Skilled workers cleaning the birds' nest manually .... now I'd done this ... and it's really painstaking work!!!

AT and I strolled along the main street and peeked down the alley ways ..... 

 Wow! So beautiful and peaceful, isn't it? For a while, I thought I was somewhere in China ... 

One of the coffee shops opened that day .... 

And we decided to drop by to sample the food ..... 

 Misai Kuching tea ... 

This was quite soothing. AT and I loved it. 

 Meatball soup

Famous here at his coffee shop, and the meatballs were juicy and bouncy. The clear broth was rich and sweet and very generously served with lots of mustard greens and some seaweed. AT loved the meatballs, I loved the vegetables. 

Fishball soup

The homemade fishballs were fresh and sweet, and tasted strongly of fish rather than flour. AT did not quite like it though.

After lunch, we left Siniawan. We certainly have to come back again one evening for the Night Bazaar. Then, he headed to Bau.
