Seng Guan Cafe : Kolo Mee 干面

My friends and I had an early start this morning. One of them has to sit for an examination at 9.00 a.m. She needs food for the brain before battling her way through the examination, which will last till 4.30 p.m.

So we left our house a little before 8.00 a.m. for some breakfast. We decided to go to Seng Guan Cafe, as we were quite impressed with the food the last time we were there.

This morning, I decided to try the kolo mee 干面 stall.

My friend ordered the dry-tossed wanton, while I ordered the kolo mee with char siew sauce.

I did not try the wanton. My friend said it was just ordinary, and she preferred the dry-tossed wanton somewhere else.

Meanwhile, all 3 of us liked the kolo mee. It was moist but not too oily. The taste was just right - not to sweet nor salty. Most importantly, the noodle was 香 and full of flavour.

Both the wanton and the kolo mee cost RM2.50 a bowl. Rest assured, we will be going back there for more kolo mee in the future.

Sandwiches For Dinner

There's a pack of bacon sitting in my freezer for a long time. I had contemplated throwing the whole pack away, until my friend stopped me. She thought it was such a waste.

Hence, I had it defrosted and pan-fried. Then I scrambled some eggs to go with my bacon.

Out I went to buy some dinner rolls. I buttered my rolls, and layered my bacon, eggs, and cucumber slices between the rolls. My friend ate some, and she said it was yum.

Last night, the two of us decided to have sandwiches for dinner again. We'd run out of bacon, so we decided to use sausages instead. My friend has an affinity for beef sausages, and she likes the Ramly brand of beef sausages. I tried the beef sausages for the first time last night, and I like them too.

Anyway, the sandwiches were quick to prepare and assemble, and most importantly, it was yum.

Hazy Day

What a hazy day. Miri doesn't seem to be a good place to stay in at this very moment.

The acrid smell of smoke tickles my nose, making me feel totally uncomfortable. The air is humid and it is really warm.

As I stepped out of the front door this morning, I was enveloped in haze. Great! Again? Haze has been occurring more often than it should.

I could hardly see past 100 metres when I drove to school. I turned on the headlights, in case other people could not see me.

We carried out our school activities as per normal. Students and teachers alike were out in the open, our lungs absorbing dirty particles in the air.

In my class, half of the students did not come to school. One student is quarantined because she showed symptoms of H1N1. I don't know what happened to the rest.

Hmn. Is the world really sick now? The earth is sick. Its people are sick. But does anyone really care?

2 of my students mentioned in a writing exercise this morning that they liked my subject because they liked the teacher, who was of course, yours truly ;) . They really made my day, despite the bad weather.

I Feel Like A Clerk

Letters keep coming from the Education Department, both from Miri and Kuching to ask for data.

I wonder if the people who sit in their offices know that collecting data takes time?

A letter comes today and demands information today.

Hello!!!

I'm not a clerk. I don't sit in the office all day.

I'm a teacher. I have to plan my lessons, teach my students, mark my essays, produce test papers and so on.

If information is required, at least give me time to collect and process it.

What annoys me the most is that people from different units in the Education Department keep asking for different versions of the same information.

Sigh.

I supply the information. My Senior Assistant supplies the information. And the data teacher supplies the information.

They are all the same information. Just different versions.

Sigh.

I'm not happy being a clerk. I don't want to be a clerk.

I want to teach in the classroom.

Sunday Dinner : Stewed Pork Belly

It's Sunday night again. But I did not have the mood to cook dinner at all, unlike my friend. So she set about to cook this pork stew for us to share.

First, she marinated pork belly with soy sauce, sugar, white pepper and a bit of five-spice powder. Then she got ready the rest of the ingredients like black fungus, lily bulb, and shiitake mushrooms. All needed to be soaked.

Next, she sauteed garlic and ginger till fragrant before adding all the other ingredients. She also added the other seasoning, like soy sauce and sugar. She let it stew for half an hour.

After half an hour, the three of us had the piping hot stewed pork belly with white rice. Yum.
