I don't remember Mom ever combining the 2 types of root vegetable in a cake ... but according to Mom, it's very common. She said my aunts did it all the time. I googled .... and indeed there were people making yam-pumpkin cakes. An example of a recipe in Kuali here.
Yam and pumpkin cake ... purple and orange made an interesting colour combination!
