Beras Keladi

Why is it called so? I asked the vendor.

Apparently, it has a faint flavour of the taro or yam.

Beras Keladi or Yam Rice is a short grain purple-coloured rice.

Beras keladi

Indeed the raw or uncooked rice smelled of yam. According to the vendor, the water measurement is of 1 to 1 ratio. I cup o rice to 1 cup of water.

 Cooked yam rice

After it is cooked, the rice, again exuded a stronger "yam" scent and flavour .... but it did not taste of yam. It was not too starchy and for dinner that night, I rather enjoyed it with the simplest of side dishes.
