Little China

"Where do we go if there's a lot of people?" my friend D**** asked while we were on our way to Little China.

Hmn .... right here in Miri, there's always Little Vietnam, Little Hong Kong, Little India .... lols ....

Little China is located in town, at the shops behind Siamese Secrets. It's a steamboat specialty restaurant, but it also serves cooked food.

We reached there about 7.15 p.m. .... and there was no one at all eating in the shop! The workers sat around and watched the television perched on the wall.

We hesitated. Should we go in?

We try, I said. So we marched into the shop and the workers quickly dispersed.

And so we sat down and ordered a mixed pot of broth - porridge on one side and pork bone on the other. We really loved the porridge steamboat at Farmland Porridge Steamboat in KL.

Pork bone broth (left) and porridge broth (right)
Our first reaction was that the porridge broth was very watery. Both the broth were slightly different in taste.

Then we ordered a Little China Special Set, RM30.00. It came in 2 plates.

This plate had white radish slices, lotus root slices, mustard greens, long cabbage, baby corn, sprouts, watercress and assorted mushrooms.

This is the second platter, with meats, seafood and fishballs. There was a single mussel, some prawns, some fish and sliced pork belly. The amount of ingredients was reasonable, I suppose. It's meant for 2 persons.

So since we had more than 2 persons the other night, we had to order some extra ingredients to supplement. Hence, these were what we ordered.

Kelp

Enoki mushrooms

Glass vermicelli

Crab stick

Tofu

Dory fish fillet

We dumped everything into the pot and boiled ....

Boiling hot pot ...

And ate them with the sauces provided. There were 4 types of sauces available ... the smelly stuff, my friend said. There were ....

Ground tangy red chilli and fermented tofu

Piquant and spicy belacan and fiery dried red chilli sauce

I had lots of the smelly belacan to dip the meats and even the veges.

Someone recommended us lamb kebab. So we tried that as well. It was quite yum, with multiple thin layers of lean and fatty meat assembled together on a skewer, and grilled.

I loved it!! The meat was not too tough, and the robust flavour of the lamb bursts in your mouth as you chewed. Recommended, if you like lamb.

The bill came to RM93.20, including drinks.
